October 16, 2012 Old Rochester Farmers' Market: Savor the Season

Icky weather is  how one could describe the Tuesdays of the 2012 Farmers' Market season.  We have had  a strange mix of rain, cold, and wind.  Not this Tuesday, though.  This Tuesday is predicted to be sun-shiny, beautiful and full of the bounty of the Fall Harvest.  All spring, summer and now fall our local farmers have been working hard out in the fields to bring us the most incredibly delicious vegetables, fruits, and meats.  We have been enjoying the fruits of their labor--let us thank them all by coming out to the market this Tuesday to show our appreciation for the wonderful local foods they've grown this season.  I will be stocking up for the winter.  On the list are 15 pounds of cabbage, 10 pounds of carrots, 15 pounds of onions, four chickens, and 30 pounds of  butternut squash.  All of these vegetables store great, and are versatile, too.  While we all might not have the storage space for that much produce, it is great if you can find a way to keep farm fresh foods in your home--it keeps your money local and you and yours get nutritionally superior foods to what you can find in the stores.

So, come along between 3-6pm this Tuesday, enjoy the weather and the music, and stock up for the winter.  Your hard working farmers and local food artisans will appreciate it.

Engelnook Farm, Rochester, MA Pesticide-Free
Eggs, Narragansett Creamery Cheeses, fresh kale and meats available for order can all be found at the Engelnook tent. Each week it is a new surprise over at Al's tent.  Al delights in creating new and visually appealing jams and jellies.  The apple pie, blueberry rhubarb and jalepeno pepper have been some of the favorites this season.  Do not be fooled into thinking these jams are only for toast--we've used them for fish, fruit spreads for pancakes or french toast, and the classic pb&j.  Each week Al also has raw, local honey, too.
